Informing, discussing: Biogas in the energy mix of the future

EnviTec Biogas envites journalists to an informative press day

Lohne, 20 May – Bioenergy is destined to play a major role in the energy mix of the future – this is the political will. No other source of renewable energy is so versatile and efficient. EnviTec Biogas AG organised a press day to inform about and discuss the prospects of biogas in the energy mix of the future. The present and future political framework conditions were also discussed. "We would like to provide information about biogas, discuss what we do as plant manufacturers and give journalists an opportunity for intensive research, thus contributing to fair press coverage on the potential of biogas", said CFO Jörg Fischer prior to the start of the press day.

The central topic of debate of the event was the future energy mix in Germany. With the upcoming amendment of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the German federal government is setting the course in the coming months for the energy turnaround. As storable and regularly producible biogas compensates in terms of energy generation for the fluctuating character of other alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar power, bioenergy represents an important step towards Germany's goal of Full Supply from Renewable Energies.

The biogas sector is faced with the task of reaching maximum energy efficiency in biogas plants. Research and development are currently showing the way to achieve this. As technological leader of this sector, EnviTec Biogas AG is working on biogas plants which are to require about 40 percent less input materials by 2020. In the last two years alone, EnviTec has successfully increased biogas output in company plants by roughly 20 percent. In the long term, these improvements in efficiency will allow for a considerable reduction of the required acreage for renewable raw materials per kilowatt of installed capacity.

Journalists visited an EnviTec biogas plant in Lüsche (Municipality of Bakum, District of Vechta) which supplies a large portion of the town's households with heat from the plant's co-generation unit, heat which accumulates as a by-product of power generation. This targeted use of co-generation already makes biogas the most efficient of all Renewable Energies today.
