World’s largest plant begins to feed into the natural gas grid

Lohne, 3 June 2009 – A milestone for the biogas sector: after 18 months of construction work, the “NAWARO BioEnergie Park“, the world’s largest biomethane plant, went on line today in Güstrow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built by EnviTec Biogas AG, the plant has a thermal output of 55 megawatts (MW). Following final completion in early 2010, it will feed 46 million cubic metres p.a. of refined biogas into the public gas grid. The plant’s output is equivalent to roughly 160 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity and 180 million kWh of heat and will cover the energy needs of a small town with a population of approx. 50,000. “This plant gives proof of our expertise in large-scale projects and opens a new chapter in the industrial use of biogas,” says Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas.

In November 2007, EnviTec Biogas started to build 20 fermenters as well as silos, administrative buildings and fermentation residue stores on the 20-ha site. The renewable resources needed for the production of biogas such as maize, grain and grass are sourced from local farmers within a 50 kilometre radius. Most of the biogas, which is refined to natural gas standards, will be sold to VNG Verbundnetz Gas AG. “If we want to achieve a secure and reliable energy supply from renewable energies, plants of the Güstrow size are indispensable,” says Felix Hess, Managing Director of NAWARO BioEnergie Park “Güstrow” GmbH and CEO of NAWARO BioEnergie AG.

EnviTec still sees huge potential in the use of biogas for the local energy supply and the reduction in natural gas imports. The company therefore offers its customers a wide range of solutions – from 190 KW plants to 4 MW modules. "We have the right plant for both farmers and energy companies to enable them to contribute to tomorrow’s energy supply and reduce Germany’s dependence on fossil sources,” says Olaf von Lehmden. This also applies to the large-scale contract for the construction of a biomethane plant in Germany, which the company has just won. The contract has a volume of over EUR 25 million. The refined biogas is scheduled to be fed into the natural gas grid from late 2010.

EnviTec Biogas AG covers the entire value chain for the production of biogas - including the planning and turnkey construction of biogas plants as well as their commissioning. The company provides the biological and technical service and also offers the full plant and operating management. In Güstrow, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, EnviTec build the world’s largest plant for the production of biogas to natural gas standards with an thermal output of 55 megawatts. In addition, the company also operates its own biogas plants. Today, the company is represented in more than 15 countries throughout Europe and as well in China and South Korea. In 2008 EnviTec generated revenues of EUR 101 million and EBIT of EUR 3.2 million. The EnviTec Group currently has about 350 employees. Since July 2007 EnviTec is listed on the Prime Standard segment of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
