Great market potential for green energy
Europe aims to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Northern European countries such as Lithuania in particular are investing heavily in renewable energy and sustainable solutions. EnviTec customer Citrone is a pioneer in the field of bioenergy. The dairy farm and dairy plant in the Šakiai district is implementing a new biogas plant, including gas upgrading, with state funding. “Our customer is relying on the comprehensive expertise of our EnviTec Biogas team and EnviThan membrane technology for the construction of the gas upgrading plant with a capacity of 675 Nm³/h of biomethane,” says Egidijus Semeta, Service Manager at EnviTec Biogas Service Baltic SIA, based in Riga.
“Such investments are an important step for the Baltic region in reducing its use of fossil fuels,” Semeta continued. Although Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia have already become independent of gas imports since 2022, they also want to push ahead with decarbonization in other sectors. For example, Lithuania’s Ministry of Transport signed a joint declaration with Germany and Japan in 2024 agreeing to promote the development and use of e-fuels with near-zero CO₂ emissions.
The gas upgrading plant produced by EnviTec at its Saerbeck site is currently in production and will be delivered on time before April 30, 2026, in accordance with the funding guidelines. After installation of all components and commissioning, the plant will feed biomethane into the local high-pressure gas pipeline. “The biomethane produced from cattle manure and slurry is intended for export and can also be used in the fuel market,” adds Stefan Laumann, Head of Gas Upgrading at EnviTec Biogas.
The globally active medium-sized company, which operates from Lohne and Saerbeck, has been an established player in the Baltic market for more than 15 years and stands out not only for its expertise in planning and implementing biogas and gas upgrading projects, but also for offering comprehensive local services. “Between 2009 and 2013 alone, we built seven plants in Latvia, and four additional gas upgrading projects have been added in Estonia since 2019,” Laumann sums up.
