Compact design and high performance continue to deliver for EnviTec Biogas

Following the signing of a new contract with Nordic energy company Gasum, German biogas plant specialist EnviTec Biogas AG is now set to begin its 14th plant construction project in Denmark. “With a nominal capacity of 935 Nm³/h, the EnviThan gas upgrading plant at Hærup is scheduled to be ready to feed into the local gas grid by the end of the year,” says Stefan Laumann, Head of Gas Upgrading at EnviTec Biogas. The compressor and the container are already ordered: their production starts at EnviTec’s Saerbeck facility in the second quarter.

The entire EnviThan system, plus Evonik’s new SEPURAN® Green G5X 11" membrane, is integrated into a single 45-foot container, with the gas compressor housed in a high-quality soundproof enclosure. “We first used this setup in 2025,” Laumann explains. “Despite its compact form factor, it still delivers a high nominal capacity.

Gasum plans to operate plant at full capacity

The plant, acquired by Gasum in late 2024, is the Finnish group’s first biogas plant in Denmark. Gasum owns and operates 19 biogas plants in the Nordic countries. In 2025, Gasum produced a total of over 900 GWh of biogas at its plants. Currently, the Hærup biogas plant is being run largely on slurry to produce 40 GWh of biogas, but the maximum production capacity of the plant is 70 GWh of biogas per year.

“The Hærup plant is an important part of Gasum’s strategy to increase the availability of biogas to our customers in the coming years. The upgrading unit is vital for us to fully utilize the potential of the plant, and we need reliable and experienced partners like EnviTec to turn our strategy into action”, says Fräs Annika Anderson, Head of Project Development & Execution, Gasum.

“The cooperation with Gasum in Denmark serves as a door opener for potential further projects in other Nordic countries, such as Finland, Iceland or Norway,” says Area Sales Manager Henning Schräder. The biogas upgrading market is a cornerstone of energy policy in Denmark, widely regarded as a climate pioneer on the global stage. According to the Biogas Danmark industry association, biogas met 40 percent of the country’s gas demand in 2025.

EnviTec Biogas has been active in the Danish market for nearly a decade. With an overall capacity of 9,910 Nm³/h of biomethane, the 13 biogas projects implemented to date are helping to scale up the nation’s ambitious emissions targets. In addition to Denmark, the company, which operates from Lohne and Saerbeck, is also active in Sweden. On a global scale, EnviTec Biogas has completed 106 EnviThan gas upgrading plants with a total installed capacity of 44,000 Nm³/h of biomethane – with many more projects in the pipeline.
